Sarah Palin: Misinformer of the Year-LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

This year, we’ve chosen Sarah Palin — former half-term governor, current Fox News contributor and prolificFacebook user — as our Misinformer of the Year.

It was a tough competition. On issues like health care, net neutrality, climate change and immigration, the conservative media offers an unprecedented flood of distortions, exaggerations and utter fabrications. We atMedia Matters for America work around the clock to expose, fact-check and counter this non-stop flood of lies and attacks.

This year, Palin stood out for her sheer ability to dominate our national conversation and draw the attention of the entire news media to her factually challenged claims and vicious attacks. She has blurred the line completely between media figure and political activist.

When Glenn Beck’s over-the-top rhetoric and conspiracy theories inspired unhinged gunman Byron Williams to target the Tides Foundation with violence, Palin could have stood up for responsibility and helped rein Beck in. Instead, she legitimized him and his attacks, saying “I stand with you, Glenn.”

From spreading lies about “death panels” to cropping Obama’s comments about “American exceptionalism,” from her comfortable perch at Fox News to her self-promoting books and reality show, Palin has truly broken new ground in misinformation.

In the year to come, Palin is sure to keep up her efforts at dominating the headlines, influencing the political process and advancing falsehoods and distortions at every turn — aided and abetted by millions in free airtime and glowing coverage from her friends at Fox News. We are prepared to fight back — but we need your help.

REVEALED: Fox & GOP Conspire to Kill Public Option

Dear Editor:

Today Media Matters for America released leaked internal Fox News emails detailing an in-house policy to regurgitate Republican talking points on the air to smear health care reform. Finally we have proof that during the health reform debate Fox News ordered its reporters to use only Republican poll-tested language, such as “government option,”1 instead of the more precise and widely accepted “public option” to make the case that the offering would be a government takeover of our health care system.

Now is the time to fight back against huge corporate interests like Fox and its parent company, News Corp. Click here and forward this email to your friends and family.

As the country focuses on the implementation of the historic health care law, it is essential that we expose politically motivated reporting poorly disguised as “fair and balanced.” America’s working families won’t be bullied by a propagandist cable network and the politicians it hires and endorses.

We reject Fox News and its attempts to continually attack the Affordable Care Act and the people who support it under the guise of legitimate “reporting.” The repeal-mongers have a cable news network, but we have the grassroots on our side. Get the word out about Fox and send this message to as many people as you can.

The line between news and politicking has been obliterated thanks to Fox News’s brazen partisanship. When you look at the way Fox News hires so many Republican presidential candidates as commentators and the way the network follows the party’s poll-tested talking points, it’s clear that Fox News is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the Republican agenda. The American people lose when a network’s news presentation is designed only to serve the political goals of billionaires and big corporations.

In Solidarity,

EDITORIAL

Dear friends,

Many of us already know that Fox News is biased — but it’s actually much worse than that. For years they have used lies, distortions, and race-baiting to divide this country. Recently, it’s gotten downright dangerous. Earlier this summer, a heavily armed man got into a gun fight with police after he was pulled over on his way to kill people at the Tides Foundation[1] — an obscure non-profit that Glenn Beck regularly demonizes on his Fox News TV show.[2]

Fox News is bad news for America — and it spreads, and is legitimized, partly through TVs in public places.

That’s why I’ve joined the TurnOffFox campaign — the first part of a larger campaign to diminish the influence of Fox. It’s about educating people about Fox and getting it turned off in stores, restaurants, and other public places.

Will you join me? It takes just a moment to declare your own household “Fox free”, and at the same time appeal to public establishments in your community to stop playing Fox. And you’ll get a FREE Turn Off Fox sticker when you do. Click here:

No other news organization that’s considered legitimate consistently wages smear campaigns based on lies and race-baiting. But for years Fox News has done exactly that, and the pattern has only gotten worse since Barack Obama entered national politics.

Here are just a few examples:
