Why Carry a Gun?
My old Grandpa said to me, "Son, there comes a time in every man’s life when he stops bustin’ knuckles and starts bustin’ caps and usually it’s when he becomes too old to take a whoopin’."

I don’t carry a gun to kill people;  I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m evil; I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the World.

I don’t carry a gun because I hate the government;  I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m angry;  I carry a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don’t carry a gun because I want to shoot someone;  I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don’t carry a gun to make me feel like a man;  I carry a gun because real men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don’t carry a gun because I feel inadequate; I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don’t carry a gun because I love it; I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police protection is an oxymoron:  Free citizens must protect themselves because police do not protect you from crime; they just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I’m too young to die and too old to take a whoopin’!

A LITTLE GUN HISTORY

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control:

From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

With guns, we are ‘citizens’;

without them, we are ‘subjects’.

During WW II, the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew that most Americans were ARMED!

Gun owners in the USA are the largest armed force in the World!

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense.

I. When was Jesus born?

A. Popular myth puts his birth on December 25th in the year 1 C.E.

B. The New Testament gives no date or year for Jesus’ birth.  The earliest gospel – St. Mark’s, written about 65 CE – begins with the baptism of an adult Jesus.  This suggests that the earliest Christians lacked interest in or knowledge of Jesus’ birthdate.

C. The year of Jesus birth was determined by Dionysius Exiguus, a Scythian monk, “abbot of a Roman monastery.  His calculation went as follows:

a. In the Roman, pre-Christian era, years were counted from ab urbe condita (“the founding of the City” [Rome]).  Thus 1 AUC signifies the year Rome was founded, 5 AUC signifies the 5th year of Rome’s reign, etc.

b. Dionysius received a tradition that the Roman emperor Augustus reigned 43 years, and was followed by the emperor Tiberius.

c. Luke 3:1,23 indicates that when Jesus turned 30 years old, it was the 15th year of Tiberius reign.

d. If Jesus was 30 years old in Tiberius’ reign, then he lived 15 years under Augustus (placing Jesus birth in Augustus’ 28th year of reign).

e. Augustus took power in 727 AUC.  Therefore, Dionysius put Jesus birth in 754 AUC.

f. However, Luke 1:5 places Jesus’ birth in the days of Herod, and Herod died in 750 AUC – four years before the year in which Dionysius places Jesus birth.

D. Joseph A. Fitzmyer – Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at the Catholic University of America, member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, and former president of the Catholic Biblical Association – writing in the Catholic Church’s official commentary on the New Testament[1], writes about the date of Jesus’ birth, “Though the year [of Jesus birth is not reckoned with certainty, the birth did not occur in AD 1.  The Christian era, supposed to have its starting point in the year of Jesus birth, is based on a miscalculation introduced ca. 533 by Dionysius Exiguus.”

E. The DePascha Computus, an anonymous document believed to have been written in North Africa around 243 CE, placed Jesus birth on March 28.  Clement, a bishop of Alexandria (d. ca. 215 CE), thought Jesus was born on November 18.  Based on historical records, Fitzmyer guesses that Jesus birth occurred on September 11, 3 BCE.

II. How Did Christmas Come to Be Celebrated on December 25?

A. Roman pagans first introduced the holiday of Saturnalia, a week long period of lawlessness celebrated between December 17-25.  During this period, Roman courts were closed, and Roman law dictated that no one could be punished for damaging property or injuring people during the weeklong celebration.  The festival began when Roman authorities chose “an enemy of the Roman people” to represent the “Lord of Misrule.”  Each Roman community selected a victim whom they forced to indulge in food and other physical pleasures throughout the week.  At the festival’s conclusion, December 25th, Roman authorities believed they were destroying the forces of darkness by brutally murdering this innocent man or woman.

B. The ancient Greek writer poet and historian Lucian (in his dialogue entitled Saturnalia) describes the festival’s observance in his time.  In addition to human sacrifice, he mentions these customs: widespread intoxication; going from house to house while singing naked; rape and other sexual license; and consuming human-shaped biscuits (still produced in some English and most German bakeries during the Christmas season).

C. In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the Saturnalia festival hoping to take the pagan masses in with it.  Christian leaders succeeded in converting to Christianity large numbers of pagans by promising them that they could continue to celebrate the Saturnalia as Christians.continued here

Dear Editor,

Blink and you’ve missed it: Hungary is no longer a democracy.

President János Áder has just signed away the rights of all that was left of Hungary’s opposition parties after years of gutting legislative powers, crippling the free press, and eliminating all mention of a "republic" in the country’s constitution.

If this trend doesn’t sound familiar, here’s something to jog your memory: along with criminalization of the homeless and attacks on women and the LGBT community, Hungary’s seen a horrific spike in state-sanctioned antisemitism and racism, including the decoration of three men known for their connection to the pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party.

We’ve seen the steps Áder’s taken before. We know these signs. And while the European Union continues to stay silent, the situation for women, ethnic minorities and religious groups in Hungary becomes deadlier by the second.

Please, join us in calling on the member states to act on Article VII of the EU Treaty, which demands they intervene to prevent any state from being robbed of its democratic freedoms. We still have time to stop Áder’s men from stripping Hungary’s people of more rights and protections — but we cannot afford to stay silent for long!

PETITION TO EU MEMBER STATES: We cannot afford to sit by while another European country represses state protections, targets minorities, and spreads anti-Semitism while eliminating free speech. Don’t let Hungary go the way of Nazi Germany — act on Article VII to ensure Hungarians’ rights and freedoms!

Physicians and patients can study any number of report cards that grade the nation’s hospitals. One comes from a healthcare quality reporting group called Healthgrades. Last month, it released its list of 262 hospitals with the lowest risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for 27 procedures and conditions involving Medicare patients.

These 262 hospitals, representing 5% of the 4500 hospitals evaluated by Healthgrades, posted an aggregate mortality rate for 18 procedures and conditions from 2009 through 2011 that was 30.9% lower than that for all other hospitals. Healthgrades estimates that if the remaining 95% of hospitals had performed just as well during this time, more than 164,000 Medicare patients might not have died. Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, coronary angioplasty and stenting, sepsis, bowel obstruction, pneumonia, and neurosurgery are among the 18 procedures and conditions that figure into the mortality rate score. Healthgrades weighs complication rates for hip replacement, back and neck surgery, carotid surgery, and 4 other procedures.

Some hospitals, Healthgrades notes, perform better than others in only a few clinical specialties. In contrast, the 262 hospitals that earned the Distinguished Hospitals Award for Clinical Excellence from Healthgrades demonstrate high-quality care across a broad spectrum of specialties, according to the group. The Healthgrades award is supposed to help patients choose a good hospital. Depending on where they live, however, their choice may require an airplane flight or a long car ride. There are no Clinical Excellence award-winners in Alabama, Alaska, Washington, DC; Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, Rhode Island, Vermont, or West Virginia.

Chemo Can Cause Cancer Too

Cancer-busting chemotherapy can cause damage to healthy cells which triggers them to secrete a protein that sustains tumor growth and resistance to further treatment, a study said Sunday.

Researchers in the United States made the “completely unexpected” finding while seeking to explain why cancer cells are so resilient inside the human body when they are easy to kill in the lab.

They tested the effects of a type of chemotherapy on tissue collected from men with prostate cancer, and found “evidence of DNA damage” in healthy cells after treatment, the scientists wrote in Nature Medicine.

Chemotherapy works by inhibiting reproduction of fast-dividing cells such as those found in tumors.

The scientists found that healthy cells damaged by chemotherapy secreted more of a protein called WNT16B which boosts cancer cell survival.

“The increase in WNT16B was completely unexpected,” study co-author Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle told AFP.

The protein was taken up by tumor cells neighboring the damaged cells.

“WNT16B, when secreted, would interact with nearby tumor cells and cause them to grow, invade, and importantly, resist subsequent therapy,” said Nelson.

In cancer treatment, tumors often respond well initially, followed by rapid regrowth and then resistance to further chemotherapy.

Rates of tumor cell reproduction have been shown to accelerate between treatments.

“Our results indicate that damage responses in benign cells … may directly contribute to enhanced tumor growth kinetics,” wrote the team.

The researchers said they confirmed their findings with breast and ovarian cancer tumours.

The result paves the way for research into new, improved treatment, said Nelson.

“For example, an antibody to WNT16B, given with chemotherapy, may improve responses (kill more tumor cells),” he said in an email exchange.

“Alternatively, it may be possible to use smaller, less toxic doses of therapy.”
