Dear Editor-Senator Patrick Leahy VT

In Cit, citrus county florida, Civil Liberties, Constitutional Rights American People, Missed Opportunity, NATION, patriot act, Senator Patrick Leahy VT, United States Senate on kp15 at 311127

The Senate just voted to extend the PATRIOT Act for another four years. I joined 22 colleagues in opposition to the extension.

Today’s vote represents a missed opportunity to improve the PATRIOT Act and ensure it protects the constitutional rights of the American people. The extension bill offers no reforms. It offers no recognition of the government’s responsibility to defend not just our national security, but our civil liberties too.

As the Washington Post noted today, the extension legislation should have included the oversight and auditing requirements that I proposed and a bipartisan majority of the Senate Judiciary Committee approved. The omission of these important provisions in the Leahy Amendment in the final bill prompted my "No" vote today.

We can keep our country secure without treating all Americans like potential lawbreakers. We cannot allow the government to search homes and businesses without any proper reason or accountability. That very form of injustice compelled our Founders to revolution.

The American people expect us to both protect our rights and keep us safe.

Sincerely,

Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator

Dear Editor-Chronicle Editorial Board

In Chronicle Editorial Board, citrus county news, crystal river, Crystal River, Florida, DEAR EDITOR, Renee Christopher-McPheeters, RENEE MCPHEETERS on kp28 at 311127

Dear Editor,

Finally, I read In the 5/26/11 Chronicle an Editorial that causes me to realize that there is still hope for this Editorial Board  speaking out for the true needs of the Citizens of Citrus County instead of worrying about what’s posted on Chronicle "Soundoff" Online. The article is about the fact that there was a Levy County Commission meeting May 4th in which those commissioners gave the "green light" to a mining project that will send "hundreds of rock trucks a day up and down our highways for the next century". I happen to live on property along Highway 19 – where these estimated 500 trips per day of huge trucks with rocks will be passing within sight and sound, possibly with rocks flying in all directions (wearing out the road also).

You are right! Where were the members of the Transportation Planning Organization  and Citrus County Commission, to look out for the citizens at this Levy Commission meeting? Where were the Chairmen of both organizations: Comm. Meek, Councilman Kitchen, Comm Chairman Damato, Dist. 1 (Note: District 1 includes Crystal River). Where were the other members of the City Councils, (Inverness and Crystal River) and administrations, besides Crystal River Mayor Jim Farley and Councilman Mike Gudis?

"Better late than never" to realize that – It is time that the citizens insist on representation and if that is refused – clean house and elect real people who will really represent them and not  be unavailable to stand up for their constituents.

ACTION ALERT-Letter to Editor

In citrus county florida, ethical violations, EYEONCITRUS.COM, FCC, lobbyist for Comcast, Meredith Attwell Baker, Revolving Door on kp51 at 311120

Free Press Action Fund: Action Alert

Stop the Revolving Door!

Outrageous!

FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker is leaving the FCC to become a lobbyist for Comcast – just four months after she voted to approve the Comcast-NBC merger.1

This is just the latest – but perhaps most blatant — example of so-called "public servants" cashing in on companies they are supposed to be regulating. But Baker’s jump to Comcast is particularly egregious. As recently as March, the commissioner was giving speeches complaining that the Comcast-NBC deal "took too long."

And you wonder why the American people are disgusted with Washington.

Stop the Revolving Door: Demand Congress Investigate Baker’s Conflict of Interest

Congress is already concerned about how the FCC conducts itself. Rep. Darrell Issa, chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has been making a lot of noise recently about alleged ethical violations at the agency. By signing this letter

to Congressman Issa, you’re urging him to launch an investigation of Commissioner Baker’s seemingly blatant conflict of interest.

Outside of Washington, people of every political stripe have expressed near unanimous contempt for a system of government that favors powerful corporations at the expense of the many. Sadly, the complete capture of government by industry barely raises an eyebrow inside the Beltway anymore. That’s why Congress needs to hear from you.

Urge Congress to Investigate this Conflict of Interest at the FCC

The revolving door at the FCC erodes any prospect for common-sense public policy — such as strong Net Neutrality rules or a rigorous review of mega-deals like AT&T’s proposed takeover of T-Mobile.

Unless we speak out now and demand an investigation, business as usual in Washington will undermine our media system and endanger our democracy.

Thank you for taking action,

Letter to the Editor-Senator Rubio continues giving Big Oil Billions

In citrus county news, FLORIDA, Gene Karpinski, NATION, Rubio continues giving Big Oil Billions, SENATOR RUBIO on kp29 at 311118

End Big Oil Handouts

Senator Rubio voted to continue giving Big Oil billions in taxpayer-funded handouts. Click here to send him a message.

Last night Senator Rubio voted to continue giving billions of your tax dollars to the most profitable oil companies.

Senator Rubio voted against legislation that would have cut taxpayer-funded giveaways to Big Oil. In the process, he stood against a bipartisan Senate majority that said “no” to Big Oil handouts. Unfortunately, the vote fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation.

Click here to send Senator Rubio a message and hold him accountable for standing with Big Oil companies instead of the people of Florida.

As you probably already know, the biggest oil companies made nearly $37 billion profits in just the first three months of this year. At the same time, while the rest of us have been paying near-record prices at the pump, oil companies are collecting billions of dollars — more than $40 billion over the next ten years — in taxpayer-funded giveaways.

President Obama and environmental champions in Congress have made it clear that ending handouts to Big Oil is a priority. That’s why Senator Rubio, who has received more than $196,000 in campaign cash from oil and gas interests, needs to hear from you — he needs to know that we’re paying attention and that continuing to give billions of dollars a year to wealthy oil companies is unacceptable.

Click here to send a message to your senator. Tell him that the most profitable oil companies shouldn’t receive billions in taxpayer-funded handouts.

LCV will continue to hold members of Congress accountable whenever they vote to stand with Big Oil companies instead of working families. With your help, we’ll do everything we can to end Big Oil handouts once and for all.

Thanks for taking action.

Sincerely,

Tell Congress to oppose H.R. 5 and put patients first.

In congress, Grassroots Action Center, LETTER TO THE EDITOR, OPPOSE H.R. 5 on kp27 at 311112

Yesterday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee favorably reported H.R. 5, the Help Efficient Accessible, Low Cost, Timely Health Care(HEALTH) Act of 2011 out of committee. This bill has already been favorably reported out of the House Judiciary Committee. The next step is the House floor.

Take Action! Tell Congress to oppose H.R. 5.

This radical and vicious bill would take away the legal rights of injured people, remove any incentives to improve patient safety, and leave everyone at risk for more injures from negligent care. H.R. 5 would impose draconian caps on damages, not just when injured by medical negligence, but also for defective drugs, or medical devices, or abuse suffered in nursing homes.  The bill also preempts state law that is more favorable to patients while keeping in place state law that favors medical providers.

Take Action! Your rights are at stake!

When hospitals, nursing homes, and drug companies cannot be held fully accountable, there is no incentive to reduce the 98,000 medical errors that kill patients every year. As a result, even more patients may suffer injury, resulting in the need for additional medical care.  The focus of this bill should be on improving patient safety, not limiting the rights of those who have been injured.
Take Action NOW! Send a message to Congress telling them to put patients first and oppose H.R. 5!

Sincerely,

People Over Profits Team

Letter to the Editor-SENATOR BILL NELSON FLORIDA

In Bill Nelson, EYEONCITRUS.COM, LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Senator Bill Nelson Florida on kp25 at 311106

Click here to visit Senator Bill Nelson's website

Here’s a link to a column I wrote for the St. Petersburg Times; please take a minute to read it over, because it’s about an issue that should be important to everyone who believes in the principle of one-person, one-vote.
http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/editorials/legislature-has-no-right-making-it-harder-to-vote/1167378

A so-called election reform bill is rapidly making its way through the Florida Legislature, which right now is in the final week of its annual lawmaking session in Tallahassee. If this bill becomes law, it would:

  • Significantly reduce the number of early-voting days;
  • Make voting harder for people who have recently changed their name or address, like, newlyweds or college students; and,
  • Subject voter-registration drives to stiff legal fines, even for inadvertent mistakes.

This is not a partisan issue, and I’m just one of many people and groups that strongly oppose this measure.
The Orlando Sentinel has said “it amounts to … ripping apart election laws” and “weakening democracy.”
The Tampa Tribune has said “this bill isn’t fooling anybody. It’s not about clean elections.”
Florida Today has called it an “assault on the most cherished of American rights.”
The Palm Beach Post has asked that we stop this “assault on all voters.”
But the state Legislature seems poised to pass it. One thing you could still do is
e-mail Gov. Rick Scott and ask him to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.

As The St. Petersburg Times has said: “Floridians of all political stripes should not stand for it.”

911 Memorial RENEE MCPHEETERS-Dear Editor

In citrus county florida, citrus county news, LETTER TO THE EDITOR, RENEE MCPHEETERS on kp29 at 311104

(this is a letter sent to Mr. John Pedalino, Director of the 9/11/01 Foundation of Florida, regarding a  recent photograph that he sent to founder of the Crystal River 9/11/01 Memorial and Candidate for Citrus County Commission, Renee Christopher McPheeters, of New York City firefighters sitting in Times Square of New York in front of a sign that announced the death of Usama bin Laden)

Thank you, I know that the picture you sent is very meaningful, since you were an officer in New York City.

It looks like we have the states on the right path now, Thank God and May He Bless the U.S.!!! Thank you again for providing the part from the World Trade Center for the Crystal River 9/11/01 Memorial. I have requested that the Citrus County School System have access to the 9/11/01 Memorial for educational seminars, as it has the authentic W.T.C. part and the three scenes from the 9/11/01 tragedies in laser art along with narrative of the horrific events.

I was thrilled seeing so many real, patriotic Americans and many young people across this great country celebrating our victory over the death of the main enemy of the U.S. and Freedom in this country.

With Best Regards and for a return of the "Good old Days" for safety and mutual respect in this country!!!
